An Alistair Dance

I am six years old in the industry but I have been a designer for a lot longer than that. I am a freelance graphic designer working for a number of small start-ups, medium sized companies and not-for-profit organisations. Traditionally I am a print designer but recently I have been involved in a number of digital projects.

Communication is my mission, dressing it up isn’t. Design that is executed with meticulous craft and fresh, innovative thinking is my goal.

Currently I am on the hunt for exciting collaborations, freelance opportunities and full time positions.

No Frills

The work I do is simple. My designs do not rely on high graphical content styled with the latest trends, but on a unique idea that is engaging and well thought through. A great idea combined with creative thinking and thorough research provides a perfect solution to effectively communicate what you want to say.

Working closely with printers, photographers and copywriters I am able to produce solutions that meet all the requirements of your brief.

So many more that I can’t remember right now. Let me know if I left you off.

Client: Firestorm PR
Project: Full Identity

Description:A logo, letterhead and website for a young and dynamic PR agency. Firestorm wanted to focus on their more refreshing and personal approach to PR.

Firestorm PR  [×]

I wanted to create an identity that portrayed the clients bubbly and energetic personality. Her unique attributes of a hands on, personal approach to every job really stood out to me and I wanted to show this in her logo.

Using the clients own handwriting and a bespoke sparkler effect I created a logo that was both human and energetic. This twinned with a vivid colour palette and unfussy typography set Firestorm apart from their competitors.

Client: The Penny West Charitable Trust
Project: Logo

Description:The Penny West Charitable Trust was set up by a three sisters in the memory of their mother to support and provide ways of raising money for a number of other charities.

Penny West  [×]

Due to the personal nature of this charitable Trust I didn’t want to over do the graphic nature of the logo, but merely use Penny’s signature. The colours of a setting sun were used to signify a new beginning both for the trust and raising of money other charities that they supported.

Seen here (1) is the logo on the catwalk for an event called “A night of Luxury” a fashion event raising money for the British Heart Foundation and the local hospital. Image 2 is a full colour logo and also shown(3) is an early concept for the trust, and the “A Night of Luxury” logo.

Client: SAC RAC
Project: Full Identity

Description: SAC RAC is a newly formed company that has designed and patented a lightweight frame to hold open (notoriously frustrating) one tonne skip bags for waste disposal and recycling.

SAC RAC  [×]

SAC RAC had little money to spend but wanted a logo and identity that stood out from the crowd at trade-shows and on a building sites without losing its robust and ready approach to waste disposal.

I designed a logo that could be sprayed with a stencil on all of the building products including: Skip bags, packaging, wheel barrows, trucks and other onsite equipment. The four dots represent the four corners of the RAC and when applied to the business cards would be drilled (1) to show that things SAC’s can be used for anything, anywhere.

Client: Gianni Colarossi
Project: Identity

Description: Originally from Italy, Gianni Colarossi designs and tailors suits to the highest standard. I was asked to design a mark that showed the quality and bespoke nature his work.

Gianni Colarossi  [×]

With a portfolio inspired by 1950’s bespoke Italian fashion, Gianni wanted to maintain this style for his logo. Using black and white with a hint of burgundy kept the look clean and uncluttered. A classic font and integrating the “g” and “o” gave a unique but bespoke feel which is reflected in his work.

Shown here are handmade envelopes to hold his work (1), the final logo (2), and applications to the swing tag and bags(3).

Client: InStar
Project: Identity

Description: After 10 years of providing roofing products for the construction industry, InStar required a fresh new look to show their developing industry and a step towards more innovative products.

InStar  [×]

InStar did not want to have a logo that represented any one product they sold. As they were looking to branch out to other roofing and construction products. With this in mind I drew a custom logo that was bold and contemporary pushing on their supporting tagline: “Innovative Construction Products”. I wanted to have some very small association with roofs so I simply angled the uprights in the logo which represented the pitches of roofs.

Client: Homeplay
Project: Rebrand

Description: Homeplay provide complete bespoke inhouse entertainment solutions. They are the only registered reseller of Bose in the local area, and since their inception at the beginning of 2006 they have been inundated with orders and installations. A coherent brand was certainly what they needed.

Homeplay  [×]

The client requested to use the same mark for his new logo, and didn’t want to veer too far away from the original logo. I decided that the typeface needed changing as the one originally used was completely wrong in terms of scale and suitabililty. Adapting VAG Rounded kept the soft round edges without looking childlike and gave a friendly approachable look to the logo.

Redrawing the mark, updating the colour palette and simply changing the scale has given the logo a more consistent look without changing the feel of the company.

Client: Folde Properties
Project: Naming & Identity

Description: I was asked to name and design a complete identity for a brand new London property development company. The focus was the top end of the market developing bespoke and unique properties finished to the highest standard all based in central London.

Folde Properties  [×]

After a lot of deliberation and discussion Folde became the name of choice. It roughly translates to high and fertile ground. Folde had to come across as bold but yet understated with a firm focus on the quality of their craftmanship. No high graphical style was designed and only the use of their "charcoal" colour would be a main aspect in the identity. The logo was designed with the idea that it would feel a fashion brand raising it's desirability and opulance.

Shown here is one side of a business card (1) and this years Christmas card/Moving Card (2&3) with a basic shape of a christmas tree doubling up as an arrow pin pointing their new location.

Client: Folde Properties
Project: Property Brochure

Description: To design a property brochure as a take away for potential buyers. Highlighting the quality of their offering Folde wanted to produce a brochure that met all the the same standards with equal measure.

Folde Properties  [×]

Case bound with a material cover, foil blocked logo, 200 gram paper and spot UV/super gloss finish on the images made sure this brochure stood out from the others.

Client: The Concrete Centre
Project: Mailer

Description: The Concrete Centre promotes the development of concrete in the construction industry. They are a not-for-profit organisation and therefore do not have a budget to commission a suite of images. A mailer had to be designed asking architects and planners to send in pictures of their buildings to collate into an image library used for future promotions.

The Concrete Centre  [×]

I designed an oversize leaflet to be used as a leave behind at conferences, lectures and forums organised by The Concrete Centre. A simple but intelligent idea was needed to attract the right type of person

Using the well known phrase “A picture speaks a thousand words” was the starting point for this piece. A description of a famous concrete building – The Wolfsburg Science Centre by Zaha Hadid placed on the front amounting to a thousand words. Highlighting the words “call for images” and on the inside placing the missing image icon added importance and gave a direct message to the viewer highlighting direct action needed to be taken to help The Concrete Centre.

Client: The Penny West Charitable Trust
Project: Mailer

Description: The Trust wanted to organise a fashion event and auction to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. The evening was named “Night of Luxury” and was held in the beautiful surroundings on Valentines day. I was asked to provide a unique bespoke mailer sent out to potential sponsors and prize donors.

A Night of Luxury  [×]

With the use of simple and stylish imagery I wanted to capture the high class nature of the event. A ribbon tying around the mailer was a simple solution pushing the idea of it being a fashion event but also a luxurious event. The ribbon formed the shape of a heart on the inside enforcing the awareness that this was an event to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, plus the event happened to fall on Valentines Day.

The mailer was placed in a bespoke envelope tied with a ribbon and the persons name written by a calligrapher to finish it off.

Client: Santa Fe
Project: Poster and Flyer

Description: After a few drinks and seeing one of the posters I approached the manager of Santa Fe and asked if I could design them a poster and flyer for one of their evenings. To date I have done a number of posters for Santa Fe Portsmouth and Santa Fe Reading.

Santa Fe  [×]

Santa Fe did not have a house style for their marketing material. Therefore I took it upon myself to create a suite of images that used earthy colours and round objects which reflected their mark and also the South American style of their cuisine and general theme.

In every image I wanted to have an underlying graphic, a hidden symbol. This was the mark used in the logo, if you look closely you can see this in the generic “live music” posters (1,2), and the “Wine and Cheese”(3) poster. The “Happy Hour” poster(3) could not be specific about any promotions so instead I left a happy image hidden in the formation of general drinking objects.

Client: The Design Museum
Project: Poster and Invite

Description: The Brief was to name, design and produce marketing material for an exhibition celebrating the impact of the internet in today’s world. The exhibition would show pieces exploring the design, use and functionality of the World Wide Web.

The Design Museum  [×]

As the Internet has made such a huge impact to our lives I felt I needed to design a poster that showed this. The explosion of the pixels was an ideal graphic but I did not want to show any one type of image as people used the internet for all manner of things. The graphic started as land formations of islands and countries around the world but this started to develop into more of a visual language for the poster. I simply coloured the graphics in the three colours that formed the colour gamut of our monitors R – G – B.

Shown here is the three posters and an invite to private viewing – a pixel. The pixel would be brought to the viewing, made up and added into the large “Connect” logo, a piece of real interaction with the event.

Client: Addington Formwork
Project: Website Redesign

Description: For 27 years Addingtons have developed a good reputation in the construction industry providing concrete framework structures for large scale construction projects. They needed an updated contemporary site showcasing some of their most recent projects.

addingtonformworks.co.uk

Addingtons  [×]

This website had to appeal to industry piers, colleagues, and potential clients. I did not want to fluff up the content by putting too many graphical elements on the pages so I stuck to a simple layout that was both flexible and easy to navigate.

As Addingtons provided concrete framework I wanted to due the same for their site. It was designed using a solid grid-based framework similar to one used in design for layouts. This meant that the site was never misaligned gave room for each element and was flexible enough to house all manner of content.

Client: SAC RAC
Project: Website Redesign

Description: Due to heightened interest and constant enquiries SAC RAC needed a website to showcase and promote their product. The website needed to appeal to both homeowners and waste/building contractors providing an overview of waste disposal and onsite recycling.

SAC RAC  [×]

SAC RAC needed a vivid online presence that informed as well as appealed to the user. Using strong contrasting colours and simple typography I carried the identity through to the website. I wanted to give it an industrial feel without all the technical speak. The site features a small image library of SAC RAC in use by different people.
